A Guide to Effective Giving by Giving What We Can

A great way to get involved in effective altruism is to give effectively.

In Switzerland, Germany & Austria, you can do this through our non-profit partner organisation Effektiv Spenden. All donations made via the platform are tax-deductible.

Besides the option of supporting us (Effective Altruism Switzerland), the platform features some of the most effective charities worldwide. These organisations are vetted by respected evaluators such as GiveWell, Animal Charity Evaluators and Founders Pledge, and are rated as outstanding even by international standards.

Since Effektiv Spenden was founded in 2019, more than 30,000 people have donated over €90 million through the platform.

If you are interested, you can also book an independent, free donation consultation with Effektiv Spenden.

What is the 🔸10% Pledge?

The 🔸10% Pledge is a personal commitment to donate 10% of your income to the charities that you think do the most good.

It’s not legally binding, but it’s a powerful way to align your money with your values.

Since 2009, more than 10,000 people in over 100 countries have joined the Giving What We Can community - together donating over $490 million to effective charities tackling global poverty, climate change, and other important issues such as animal welfare and AI safety.

The🔹Trial Pledge

If 10% feels like a lot, you can start with a 🔹Trial Pledge.

Pick your own % (1%, 2%, 5%... whatever feels right) and try it for a few months or a year to see how it feels.

Many people lump charities into one “doing good” bucket. Others are sceptical that donating works at all. The reality is that not all charities are equal. Most do good work, but the difference between good and great can be substantial. Some charities are significantly more impactful than others.

Doing the greatest good?

That’s incredible. The sheer scale of global inequality means that an “ordinary” person living in a high-income country falls somewhere between the top 1 - 5% of income earners worldwide, which means you’re probably on the global rich list. (Use the calculator below to see where you land!)

You’ll be amazed at how you compare to the world, and how much impact your donations could have.
